I can guarantee you people were not saying the same things about Campbell that they are saying about RGIII. That includes Redskins fans, homers, haters, whatever, as well as fans and analysts from around the league, as well as experts employed by everyone from advanced stats sites to ESPN.

If you don't think there's a real, substantial difference between RGIII/Luck and (name your upper or lower 1st round no-name pick of the past), that doesn't so much say something about RGIII/Luck as it does the way you are looking at it.

I think you are way overstating the hype here. I haven't seen anyone who has claimed that RGIII is a lock for a HoF career. (Though I have seen people who have said so about Luck.) Most people are very careful to talk about his potential in terms of potential. Thta's why they say things like "he has the potential to be . . ."

I know you are trying to be realistic, but it comes across like you are upset that people are getting excited about RGIII. Come on. That's just not being realistic. By anyone's estimation both of these QBs are the best prospects that the NFL draft has seen in 15 years. It's OK to get excited about the opportunity to grab one of these two guys.

What's unrealistic is to pretend that just because RGIII hasn't played a down in the NFL we have zero reason to expect him to succeed. Rolling Eyes If college game tape, workouts, interviews, character, etc. are all irrelevant to the NFL, why even have a draft at all? Just randomly assign people — after all, if anyone can go bust then there's no reason to think one player is better than another, right?

Here's what's more realistic: 1st round picks, and especially guys in the top 10, make All-Pro and Pro Bowls at far higher rates than everyone else. Even though they aren't always right, scouts and experts in general know what they are doing. Anyone can watch RGIII play and see that he has the tools and potential to become a great NFL QB. Watch him in interviews and look at his family history and it's clear he's also got his head on straight (which was the major factor in a lot of 1st round busts). So I don't see how it's not realistic to be excited about a guy who has no discernable question marks.

That doesn't mean I think he's in the HoF already. It just means I can't wait to see him play, and I think he's going to contribute a lot to this team. He also has the potential to be great, and I'm hoping he will be. That's all.

I hate to be a "you know what" about this, but it needed to be said, IMHO. Wink My advice is to relax and enjoy the ride. I haven't been this excited to watch our draft pick play since we got Sean Taylor.

To borrow from another thread subpoint:

Campbell never had, and will never have "IT" (and I was/am a Campbell fan).

RG3 has "IT" literally oozing out of him. Its very hard not to be excited (or turned on if thats what he does for you) about him or Luck, really. They're both projecting to be awesome.

I think a good example of the incredibly rare brand of magnetism that RG3 has is the way he completely had Gruden eating out of his hand in that qb camp show. As others have commented, Gruden never got in a hard question on him, quite honestly because he was so damn enamored with him. Hell, my wife was watching the end of it with me last night (yes I recorded it and have watched it a few times, AND?) and her only comment was "Who is that other guy? He seems really really into that quarterback."

Concur that RGIII has the IT factor, and in abundance. Think Luck also has IT, but not as clear as RGIII. Now, just because you have IT does not make you a great QB.....look at Tebow, with an over-abundance of IT, but lacking in QB skills. But....there were plenty of folks warning about lack of QB skills in the case of Tebow, whereas with RGIII every pundit I have heard speaks of potential greatness for him. There was no IT factor involved with Campbell.....and I liked Campbell, thought he got a bit of a raw deal here WRT the variety of coordinators and coaches he was subjected to....and he always carried himself well, and did not disparage via the media concerning his situation (unlike McNabb trying to throw the Skins under the bus)... but at the end of the day he is an average QB in the NFL, and was only drafted 25th vice 2nd.

Every Skin fan I encounter....and even fans of other teams....are eager to see RGIII and how he works out...hopefully we are all not disappointed.

+1 Very well put. It's been along time since we've had this much reason to truly be excited about going into a season. I can understand the hesitation in some people (we've been let down so many times), but with the potential of either prospect, we're as close to a "can't lose situation" as you can be. It's a great feeling! After the last 20 or so years I'm not taking it for granted.

I love seeing stuff like this. A great example of how getting a "franchise qb" has a positive effect on the team as a whole. The skins will have a new swagger to the step this year!

Is it draft day yet?
