This just in from the Washington Post:

Redskins' Line of Work
After Loss, Team Signs DT Cannida, Considers Re-Signing Wilkinson
By Mark Maske, Washington Post

The Washington Redskins decided yesterday to sign free agent defensive tackle James Cannida. Club officials hoped the move would help to bolster the interior of a defensive line that struggled to stop the running game of the Carolina Panthers in the Redskins' 20-0 loss Saturday night in their exhibition opener.

Cannida, a five-year NFL veteran who spent last season with the Indianapolis Colts, was traveling to the Washington area last night and, barring any last-minute snags, should sign a one-year, minimum-salary contract and be on the practice field this afternoon. Team officials also continue to contemplate the possibility of re-signing Dan Wilkinson, the veteran defensive tackle who was released by the team on the second day of training camp.

I think Cannida is ok, but nothing special. He's better than Big Daddy though. I hope they don't re-sign Wilkinson. His attitude will be even worse than in the past. Only 17 tackles last year? He could have just laid down on the field, and more people would have fallen over him!! He sucks!!! Send him to Dallas!

Are the Skins still going to go after Keith Traylor or Ted Washington?

I thought the front office had confidence in it's young defensive linemen when we released BDW. Signing Cannida has the stench of desparation about it.

Seems to me that we'd be better off letting the kids like Greg Scott and Bernard Jackson and Del Cowsette some playing time. Unless someone releases a stud (as happened last year with Gardener), I don't see bringing in more mediocre guys.

I agree with all of you. Hopefully we won't give up our pursuit of Keith Traylor or Ted Washington. The d-line is crucial to a successful season.

Yea this seems like a total waste of money. If the guys isn't exceptional then we might as well run with the younger guys. We need to let them reach their potential, not go after someone who we KNOW is only mediocre.

Cannida is still pretty young too. He's also had experience. He gave us hell when we played Indy last year. He had a sack, 2 tackles for loss, and a fumble recovery. He'll be cheap, and he's a better pass rusher than the guys we have now. It can't hurt to give him a shot.

That's my feeling, TX--you can't have too many tackles in camp given our situation. Let 'em all play, and may the best men win!

I have no problem at all with this signing - as the newshog says let them all fight for a job. However I do have a sinking feeling that unless we can engineer a trade or this years version of Gardener falls into our laps (and lightening rarely strikes twice) we will be seeing an awful lot of teams running the ball right down our throats.

Its a bit early to hit the panic button but we have been down this road before.
