anybody know the exact formula for figuring QB Rating???? i think 158.3 is perfect but thats all i know about it .....at least as far as figuring it up.

ok nevermind, i got it. and for those of you who didn't know and are interested here it is.
this system rates the passer, not the QB. stats dont reflect leadership, play calling, other intangibles, or run attempts.
4 categorys are used as a basis for compiling a rating:
1 percentage of completions per attempt
2 average yards per attempt
3 percentage of TD passes per attempt
4 percentage of interceptions per attempt

ok, within this formula round to the nearest thousandth (0.000, although some round to the nearest hundreth 0.00, as in the first example i copied - steve young, in my rating on ramsey, i use thousandths 0.000) example - thousandths 1.1112 would be 1.111, 1.1119 would be 1.112, hundredths 1.112 would be 1.11, 1.119 would be 1.12. the most points earnable per category is 2.375, the lowest 0. the best completion per att. would equate to 77.5, best yds gained per att would be 12.5, best TD percentage would be 11.9, best int percentage would obviously be 0 INT's. total figures are added together to compile a total the divdied by six then multiplied by 100 to get a rating.(i know it sounds like rocket science right now but bear with me i'll explain)

that said, here is an example breakdown on steve young's record setting season, and another on ramsey vs the ravens last week. the real formula lies within so pay attention.

s. young - 1994... 324 of 461 / 3969 yds / 10 INT's
1. % of completions per att. 324 of 461 = 70.28% now subtract 30 from that number, 70.28 - 30 = 40.28, multiply the result by 0.05, 40.28 x 0.05 = 2.014, note: the highest points awarded would equal 77.5% @ 2.375, or the lowest at 0.
2. average yds gained per att. 3969 divided by 461 att = 8.6095444 or 8.61(notice this situation rounds to the hundredth). subtract three yds, 8.61 - 3 = 5.61, then multiply the result by 0.25, 5.61 x 0.25 =1.403, again if the result is less than zero, award zero points, greater than 2.375 award 2.375 points.
3. % of TD passes. 35 Td's in 461 att = 7.59%, multiply the TD percentage by 0.2, 7.59 x 0.2 = 1.518, lowest points awarded 0, highest 2.375
4. % of INT's. 10 INT's in 461 att = 2.17%, multiply INT percentage by 0.25, 2.17 x 0.25 = 0.542, now subtract that result from 2.375(which would be perfect, or no INT's), 2.375 - 0.542 = 1.833, again no less than 0 points, or no more than 2.375 will be awarded.
5. add your totals together, from 1,2,3 & 4, 2.014 + 1.403 + 1.518 + 1.833 = 6.768, now divide this sum by 6, 6.768 / 6 = 1.128 and multiply this number by 100, 1.128 x 100 = 112.8 hence the passer rating.
now for ramsey last week. i'll just do the math not the commentary.
ramsey last week vs ravens - 8/13 100 yds 1 TD 0 INT
1. 8 / 13 = 61.538% - 30 = 31.538 x 0.05 = 1.577
2. 100yds / 13 att = 7.692 - 3 = 4.692 x 0.25 = 1.173
3. 1TD / 13 att = 7.692 TD% x 0.2 = 1.538
4. 0INT / 13 att = 0 INT% x 0.25 = 0, 2.375 - 0 = 2.375
5. 1.577 + 1.173 + 1.538 + 2.375 = 6.663 / 6 = 1.111 x 100 = a passer rating of 111.1 for ramsey against the ravens, even though its preseason, and it was only a half, those were pretty good numbers for ramsey, lets hope this is the game he brings each and every sunday
wow that was alot to post. a passer can have a rating after just 1 pass, although most are judged on 100 passing att, or a whole season, or even career, so keep that in mind too!
