2014 Projected Roster

Postby riggofan » Fri Jul 18, 2014 1:11 pm

Good article on ESPN. I'm sure this will change as camp gets going, but its an interesting starting point to see where the big positional battles might be:

http://espn.go.com/blog/nfceast/post/_/ ... ted-roster
Quarterbacks (3)

Robert Griffin III
Kirk Cousins
Colt McCoy

Jay Gruden only had two quarterbacks in each of his three seasons with Cincinnati, but Griffin still needs to prove his durability. If something happened to him, they woulld still be in good shape with Cousins and McCoy. If they go with two then McCoy gets left off.

Running backs (4)

Alfred Morris
Roy Helu
Lache Seastrunk
Darrel Young

The Redskins could also stash Chris Thompson on the practice squad as further insurance. Thompson can easily bump himself onto the roster with a good summer; he’s a good fit in Gruden’s offense and the new coach liked Thompson coming out of college. But durability is an issue. By keeping four here, the Redskins can go with an extra player at another spot. This means Evan Royster is on the outs, but he doesn’t give the Redskins anything they don’t have in better players. He is insurance only.

Receivers (6)

Pierre Garcon
DeSean Jackson
Andre Roberts
Aldrick Robinson
Ryan Grant
Santana Moss

I am not cutting Leonard Hankerson, rather I’m just not sold that he will be on the active roster at the start of the season. If he shows this summer that he can play, then, yes, I would have him on the 53-man roster. But the Redskins were not sure what to expect from him and when he might be healthy. Therefore, I can see him taking a little longer to return. Gruden likes Moss and they drafted Grant. Robinson needs to take a step.

Tight ends (3)

Jordan Reed
Logan Paulsen
Niles Paul

Rookie tight end Ted Bolser would head to the practice squad, where he can develop. He didn’t look close to a roster spot just based on how he looked this spring. Reed is firmly entrenched as the starter with Paulsen their top blocker and Paul a special teams ace.

Offensive line (10)

Trent Williams
Shawn Lauvao
Kory Lichtensteiger
Chris Chester
Tyler Polumbus
Morgan Moses
Spencer Long
Josh LeRibeus
Tom Compton
Mike McGlynn

In reality, I could see them keeping only nine offensive linemen. It all depends on how Long and/or LeRibeus looks at guard. They love Long -- Gruden has said he could compete immediately -- so if he shows he can play, then they could cut Chester. Compton is a little surprise, but they like him as well. This position will be fluid and I’m not sold on the 10 I have listed.

Defensive line (6)

Barry Cofield
Jason Hatcher
Chris Baker
Stephen Bowen
Jarvis Jenkins
Kedric Golston

This one is fluid as well because it depends in part on Bowen’s health. I like Chris Neild and so do they, but can they keep him? Golston is more versatile and a key player on special teams, but he’s also 30 and they must get younger.

Linebackers (9)

Ryan Kerrigan
Brian Orakpo
Perry Riley
Keenan Robinson
Trent Murphy
Darryl Sharpton
Adam Hayward
Brandon Jenkins
Akeem Jordan

As of now I’d have Rob Jackson out, especially if Jenkins develops as a pass-rusher. But this will be a close race. And I have them keeping an extra guy inside in Hayward because of his special teams ability.

Cornerbacks (5)

DeAngelo Hall
David Amerson
Tracy Porter
E.J. Biggers
Bashaud Breeland

Chase Minnifield remains eligible for the practice squad. Richard Crawford is coming off a knee injury and it’s hard to place him on here without seeing him play. The one benefit for Crawford is that he can play in the slot; they need depth at that spot.

Safeties (4)

Ryan Clark
Brandon Meriweather
Phillip Thomas
Trenton Robinson

I really don’t feel good about this position and am not confident that I have this one right, at least for that final spot. Robinson’s special teams ability gives him the edge over Bacarri Rambo, who must have a strong camp. Akeem Davis can help on special teams, but with no NFL experience he will be stashed on the practice squad.

Specialists (3)

Kai Forbath
Nick Sundberg
Robert Malone

The Forbath selection is based on never having seen rookie Zach Hocker kick in an NFL game. If Hocker is consistent this summer and shows a strong leg, then he can win the job.

Big surprise to me here is Brandon Jenkins over Rob Jackson. Seems like Jenkins has a lot to prove before I'd project him making the roster much less beating out Jackson.

Also, I know we durability concerns with RGIII, but I'm not sure its enough to force us to keep McCoy around. Griffin just played the past year on a bum leg and survived intact. I bought this scenario a little more when we had Grossman, and I could see how that made sense. Thoughts?

I think Bowen starts on PUP & we keep Nield. If Hurt has a good camp, he could push LeRibeus &/or Compton for a roster spot. I agree with you about Jenkins over Jackson unless Jenkins has a monster camp on D & ST.

Good point about Bowen/Neild.

I'm curious too about Adam Gettis. Is Lichtensteiger such a lock at center? Or maybe a chance to get a guy in for the future in Gettis?

I don't see how we can cut a proven playmaker in Rob Jackson. The guy has a nose for the ball and creates turnovers. The only reason he doesn't see the field as much as he should is, because of Orakpo. Rak is a better pass rusher, but Jackson is the better playmaker and I hope he is not cut so some other team can benefit from his services.

^ I agree totally. There are probably 4 guys on that list that I'd cut before Jackson.

I thought it was a surprising choice by the writer.

Its a good rough draft until we have more insight from camp... not much chance that we let Rob Jackson go, he's solid depth and starter quality if it weren't for already having Rak and Kerrigan.
I think Rambo makes the team... and I'd have Niles and McCoy more on the bubble.
Still rooting for Chase and wouldn't be surprised if Hocker wins the kicking job. . Unless Kai has gained some distance he is a liability on KOs

I'd say he's overwhelmingly likely to or we wouldn't have spent a draft pick on him. I'm not saying that people can't make a perfectly reasonable argument for Forbath, but clearly that we used a draft pick on a kicker means that Gruden thinks the short kickoffs and lack of long range field goals doesn't cut it. The only way Forbath wins at this point is if at the end of the preseason Gruden doesn't trust Hocker to deliver.

Right on, man. I agree about Rambo just given the overall shaky state of the safety position. I can't see Niles Paul being on the bubble though. We only have four TEs on the roster, and I'm sure we'll take three. Paul is one of the few proven special teams guys. I'd expect him to make the team and Ted Bolser to end up on the practice squad.

Jackson gets bonus points for breaking Jerruh's heart at the end of the '12 season... Cowboy Killah's get special ranking.

None the less, Brandon Jenkins CAN shine... he sure has the talent, but does he have the heart? Has he brushed off all of the injury rust? He struggled last year, but he's one of those players who could go somewhere else and turn into a beast. I hate it when that happens.

That's all's I'm sayin 'Trey!!
That pick sealed a place in my heart for Rob for eternity lmao! !!

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the wideouts yet... Robinson making the team is less likely than the rookie Grant, due to the signing of a speedster that can actually catch! I suppose a set w Garçon, DJax, Robinson, and Helu or Seastrunk would be more speed than any D can even hope to cover.... but that's just fun on Madden, idk if it will play out in real life. Hanktime has his ups and downs, but also isn't he our tallest receiver?

idk... watching Gruden's play calling in the past suggests that, not only is it possible... it's LIKELY! If he can get matchups... and time for the quarterback... it's happening.

BTW... I think Hankerson sticks over Aldrick... Hank's hands have gotten better... Robinson's hands, not so much.

Yeah I was wondering about the WRs. Is six kind of the minimum number you would expect a team to take?

I would think so too. Guess it depends on how healthy he is?
